Notes
A woven silk grave cover bears a design composed of repeating rows of broken lines on a dark green ground, each line contained within a narrow frame containing the testimony: “There is no god but God and Muhammad is the Messenger of God” in white with red borders on a dark green ground. The narrow frames above include prayers for the Prophet, and the frames below them include invitations to the four caliphs, Abu Bakr, Omar, Uthman, and Ali, and to the companions of the Prophet, and between the frames appear the words God and Muhammad superimposed on each other. The coffins of important figures in Ottoman Turkey were wrapped in different types of fabric, similar to this piece, with its broken decoration of written invitations. It is believed that these textiles were made to resemble the covering of the Kaaba in Mecca. The oldest textiles of this type were dated to the eleventh / seventeenth century, and the most recent to the thirteenth / nineteenth century.
