Notes
The Marinid Madrasah in the city of Salé is revealed from the outside by a very beautiful door, with a broken arch and surrounded by a sculpture. It was built above an external staircase, and is surrounded by a carved cedar wood arch. A foyer from which a staircase leads to the upper floors leads to the corner of a small rectangular courtyard, 8 meters long and 5 meters wide, surrounded by student rooms that are illuminated through the facade, not through the courtyard. The porticoes rest on built-up supports, which were rotated in the form of columns, their trunks covered with tile cladding, while the side supports took the form of linked columns. The architectural plan of each side facade is organized into a wide middle span, surmounted by a lintel and four openings, more narrow and lower, whose sides are decorated with transverse folds. The smaller sides of the building are marked by three openings, representing an arch with a refined border, surrounded by two small, perfectly round arches. The four walls are crowned with a prominent, well-constructed frieze covered with painted tiles. The prayer hall opens into the depth of the building and is organized into a rectangular hall, within which there are two arches defining a central square covered by a beautiful pyramid-shaped roof. While the skillfully decorated mihrab was carved, as required by tradition, into the wall opposite the entrance. Similar to all Marinid schools, the filling decoration uses successively zellige (here the colors are black and green), carved gypsum and carved wood, and around the edifice are several friezes bearing Kufic inscriptions.
