Notes Pictorial designs flourished in Safavid textiles in the 10th century AH/mid-16th century AD. These shapes often resemble book illustrations from that period. This velvet is distinguished by the large size of its shapes, which is unusual in other velvets from the tenth century AH/sixteenth century AD, and the richness of its surface texture. In some areas, uncut loops of metal-wrapped silk thread have been added to the traditional silk pile, contrasting with the background of the bright metal thread.
