Notes
Tang Dynasty Chinese porcelain was traded as fine porcelain across the Indian Ocean to Iraq. Iraqi potters soon began developing local alternatives. They imitated the white color by inventing opaque white paint, and decorating it with a cobalt blue pattern or design. Most inscriptions indicate good luck or the name of the potter. This bowl is an exceptional example of so-called “blue and white ceramics”, as it bears a single bold line of Kufi calligraphy.
