Notes This is a fragmentary version of the Shahnameh (Book of Kings), a poetic epic that tells the story of pre-Islamic kings and heroes in Iran. The manuscript was probably produced for the Iranian ruler Shah Abbas the Great sometime after his accession to the throne in 1587 and contains sixteen plates, two of which were added later, around 1676. The plates are among the most beautiful examples of Persian painting ever produced and each is exquisitely illustrated and filled with great detail.
