Notes
The Mi'raj is the scene of the great Prophet Muhammad's ascension to heaven to reach the throne of God. The iconography of the scene has become firmly established in the traditions of Iranian painting since the fifteenth century. The accompanying composition of the Miraj with poetic praise of God and His Messenger traditionally opened the door to writing manuscripts of historical, biographical and poetic works of classical Persian literature. In the center of the scene we see the Prophet Muhammad riding the magnificent, shining animal, a horse with the head of a woman. The Prophet Muhammad is usually depicted surrounded by a large glowing halo around his head and his face is covered with a veil, which may have been added later to the image. In front of the Prophet we see the angel Gabriel showing him the way. Above the angel there is a lion, which is the heavenly personification of Ali, the first imam considered by the Shiites. Angels bearing gifts fly around the Prophet. Between the figures against the blue sky there are dense Chinese clouds. The subject of the miniature brings together two important miracles in Islam: Al-Isra (Sura No. 17), which tells the story of the Prophet’s journey by night, flying from Mecca to Jerusalem, and the Ascension, which was narrated in the hadith, which is the story of the miracle of the Prophet’s ascension to heaven to reach the throne of God.
