Notes
This jug has an oval body, a base with a high leg, and a flat and pointed pouring spoon. The body is decorated with three oval medallions, two of which on either side bear the shape of a winged lion or a mythical animal facing forward, with a high front leg and a crotch tongue, while the middle medallion is decorated with a double-headed eagle. The space between the medallions is filled with three-leafed palm leaves. The neck and foot are filled with a band of rings containing quadrilateral leaves. The Achaemenid and Roman influences are noticeable, respectively, in the winged lion as a decorative motif and in the indigo decoration of the neck and foot. These elements show the cross-cultural influences of later Sasanian metalwork. But dating the piece to the beginning of the Islamic era is also possible given that the primitive poses of eagles and mythical animals could mean that the source of the work is a workshop in western Iran, Syria or even Constantinople.
