Notes
This piece is a metal plate from India depicting Shah Jangir, the fourth Mughal Emperor of India and his wife Nur Jahan. Against a black metal background, Jangir wears traditional Mughal court clothes decorated with gold bands and is armed with a long sword hanging at his waist. He is embracing his last and most favorite wife, whom he married in 1611. He is staring at her, his facial expression symmetrical, his hand on her arm, which clearly represents admiration for the Empress. The Empress is armed with a dagger on her hip decorated with a golden lion band. She holds a fan in her right hand, engraved with her title in gold. In her left hand she holds a hookah connected to a hook at the other end of the janjir. At the top of the metal plate is engraved with Persian words that say: “Mrs. Noor Jahan and Emperor Jangir.” It is noteworthy that Noor Jahan’s name was mentioned before the emperor.
