The mihrab is a distinctive architectural element in mosques and other Muslim places of worship. It works to confirm the direction of Mecca, towards which all worshipers are heading. The mihrab is shaped like a niche and is usually concave, but there can be flat examples of it, as the example shows here. This mihrab, which represents only the upper central panel of what is undoubtedly a larger group, is inscribed with a text from the Qur’an (15: 45-47), which refers to heaven and says that it decorated a funerary edifice.
