Notes
Surah 12 of the Qur’an tells the well-known story of the life of the Prophet Joseph. In the fifteenth century, the story of Yusuf and Zulaykha (the wife of Al-Aziz) was retold and added to, in poetic form, by the well-known Persian poet Jami. The story is a metaphor for a Sufi search for unity with the highest, divine self, where its heroes are Zuleikha, who represents the inclinations of the imperfect human spirit and its quest to approach divine perfection, which in turn is represented by the character of Joseph. In the illustrations in the manuscript, which was produced about a century and a half after the poet’s death in 1492 AD, the state of Joseph as a prophet is depicted with a halo surrounding his head. The opening of the manuscript has a doctrine title.
