Notes
This genealogy depicts male figures from Bitjanjir, the fourth emperor of Mughal India (reigned 1605-1627). For the Mughals, history and lineage play an important role in establishing the legitimacy of rule, as well as high origin and culture. In the portraits, Janjir and his descendants show similar, idealized facial features, and their robes and turbans are decorated with fine fabric and precious stones, as if they were adhering to the special standard of the dynasty.
