Notes This Ottoman Leather Flask (Matra) is made of several layers of strong leather. The outer decoration consists of grained leather and a yellow silk rope to carry it. The bottle is decorated with a floral pattern and the Seal of Solomon, a sign of protection, in a lighter brown colour. Leather water bottles were an essential part of the cavalry equipment for ordinary soldiers or officers, which was common among the Ottomans. Collections in Germany, Austria and Hungary are based on spoils from wars between the Ottomans and the Habsburgs, which contain similar flasks.
