Notes
This Safavid rug is decorated with floral motifs and hunting scenes. Parts of the central section and borders are missing. The multiple flowers, buds and leaves are intertwined to form a decorative pattern on a dark background, and the center of the carpet is crossed in a bilateral manner by a line of palmetto flowers. Different animals can be identified among the floral pattern: a lion leaping towards a speckled bull, a leopard hunting an ola, three lone tigers, the mythical creature the unicorn, and in the center of the carpet a pair of leaping gazelles being chased by tigers. Bands of clouds originating from Chinese mythology fill the space between the animals and floral motifs. The overall model is symmetrical, with a row of palm flowers forming the axis of the two opposite halves. The dark green outer border is also decorated with flowers. The shapes of this carpet resemble the design of Safavid books and are reminiscent of paradise gardens.
