Notes
The jug features a brilliant undulation of bright gold arabesques of wrinkles and dots painted over the opaque white glaze. The design is close to perfection: with strokes of color the Persian potter leaves some decorative elements white and fills the adjacent surface. This mirrored technique requires special skill and care from the master. The rooster has been considered by Iranians as a ritual source of good news since pre-Islamic times. The art of lustrous painting on ceramics was mastered by Iranian potters in Kashan in the late twelfth century. The technique involves using a mineral-based pigment over the fired and glazed pot.
