Notes
The painting depicts the emperor sitting with a cushion behind him on an octagonal portable throne with a sofa beneath it at the foot of a tree in an open field. A poet or a sheikh, a scholar, a “mullah,” presents him with a book. The throne rests on a Mughal carpet with floral patterns atop a platform. In the hands of the Emperor are two of his courtiers, and two musicians, one of whom plays the sitar (a stringed instrument) and one on the tambourine. Next to him is the falcon holder, who carries a large falcon in his right hand. Next to him is a person to the right of the falcon holder, a person to his left, and the last one carries a stick, and next to him is another mullah. The four people trailing behind are only partially visible at the base of the platform. The Emperor is waving a figure behind him with a fan, and to the immediate left of the Emperor stands a servant with a towel and another carrying an indistinct object. All these figures are on the carpet except the mullah and two servants sitting. Right at the top of the stairs on the platform, there is a plate with a flask that may contain water, along with a leaf that sprays water coming from the mouth of the flask. There is a cup nearby, and in the left corner there is a covered cup. In the big tree behind the emperor there are two birds, and in the horizon line that is at a hill there is a large forest in the middle of which there is a castle. The painting is pasted on a canvas and the borders (frames) are on a separate piece of paper.
