Notes
Such ceramic jugs with a cylindrical body and flat angular/oblique handles were produced in Iznik workshops in the second half of the 16th century onwards. The particular shape most likely originated in Eastern Europe or from the manufacture of prototypes of leather, wood or metal in the Balkans. Such jugs could have been used as drinking vessels, flower vases or as interior decoration. The Khanenko Museum ewer is painted in a meticulous, free-form outline with repeated images of tall blue-gray tulips and two types of braided red flowers with their naturally curved stems in the body of the vessel. Two bands in a zigzag pattern wrap around the frame and legs of the ewer. The style and gradual color of the paint suggest that the piece was produced in the first half of the seventeenth century.
