Notes Many oral agreements set the foundations for Muslims to conduct their daily lives. By writing down these agreements, the words are accurately recorded and preserved and thus accessible to the rest of the people. Beautiful inscriptions, gilding of leaves, and formation of documents were considered essential when drawing up the legal contracts that bound people in marriage. This marriage certificate is between Hassan II, son of Muhammad, and Fatima, daughter of Abdullah, and dates back to the month of Jumada al-Awwal of the year 1240 AH (December 1824). The certificate is richly decorated with gold-plated gouache on the parchment and has inscriptions in Moroccan calligraphy. Four large letterheads were written on the certificate in cursive script.
