Notes This incense burner is one of two pieces that both belong to a similar set of pieces. Within the group a high degree of standardization/uniform design is apparent, with the vessels displaying close similarities. But two main decorative systems can be identified. This incense burner represents one of these two systems, which is the result of the shapes of a single division of a palm leaf. Other examples of incense burners with this decoration system are in the Herat National Museum and in the private collection published by Hasse et al. The object is in the form of a turned column with a flattened base. The body of the incense burner is largely composed of three different sections. The lower part is solid and has engraved decoration that ends exactly above the base/foot. The middle part consists of an openwork work that shows a symmetrical design of leaves wrapped around a palm leaf. This alternates with a circular decoration showing the Solomon's Knot. The entire design is inverted around the horizontal axis. And around the part that makes up the mouth/nozzle of the incense burner. There are small holes punched through the inscription and thus indicate a different use at a later stage, perhaps to hang the vessel somewhere. The analysis of the object as an incense burner is supported by an example in the Linden Museum in Stuttgart, where a similar object exists. There is a small bowl in the center of the incense burner that has been designated in which the incense burner can be placed.
