Notes “The suburbs of Algeria extending up to three leagues are decorated with rural houses and gardens... The land is very fertile and the climate is suitable for the growth of plants, so that several types of trees bear fruit twice a year” (Renaudeau, cited by M. Belhamisi in his book “Alger par les eaux The current "House of the People", the former summer residence of Dey Mustafa with its annexes, such as Villa Youssef or the Bardo (museum), or Villa Mohieddine, and the Villa of the Arches, "Jnan Al-Akhdar" and "Jnan Al-Mufti" in the Valley of the Consuls in Bouzarieh, "Jnan Kasb Al-Hind" in Belcourt...and we find in these rural houses the same spaces that constitute the city house: the "shed" (entrance) and the "middle of the house." (the spacious area), the "houses" (rooms), the bathroom, and the "promenade". The spaces in these houses have expanded due to the absence of restrictions in the city related to the lack of space. The "basement", which in the city only represents a hole in the wall, has become a real living room with its windows on three facades, which open to the outside. The park is no longer high on the roof, but rather is on the same level as the garden. We also find in these houses the same architectural elements, such as the wooden or marble frames of the gratings, the marble frames of the external doors, the cladding of tile and marble, the niches and the lamps... And “the water that made these “garden” (singular garden of garden) a true Eden, was secured by waterwheels and directed through a suspended channel (…) towards the part of the dwelling in which the kitchen and bathroom were located” (C Marcy, “L'architecture musulmane d'Occident / Islamic Architecture in the West”).
