Notes
Dara Shehu was the favorite son and crown prince of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan (r. 1627-58). However, Dara never ascended to the throne as in 1659 he was killed during a war for the throne that broke out when his father fell ill in 1657. Both men wore a lot of jewellery, mainly pearls, emeralds and rubies. Shah Jahan, with his partially gray beard and wearing a jacket with a fur collar, presented a large ruby (or Balkhash stone) to Dara. The angels, depicted in a European style and flapping their wings above, symbolize imperial greatness, while the ball on which the father and son stand indicates the status of Shah Jahan, considered king of the world (which is the English translation of the title Shah Jahan).
