Notes This portrait of the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman (1494/5-1566) is generally attributed to Titian's circle, mainly because of the inscription on the reverse. There is no original portrait of Solomon by Titian that has survived to this day, and of these there are two known tentatively as side-portraits. Comparison with other types of recorded portraits shows that its composition is related to an initial type published by Paolo Giovio (1483-1552 AD) and after 1543 when he included a number of copies of portraits of sultans in his collection of portraits in Camus. This year marks the first possible date for this painting.
