Notes
The lock belongs to a group of bar locks from the Bumiller collection. It is almost completely intact despite its relatively incoherent shape. The general shape of the lock resembles an elongated rectangle with a protrusion below the keyhole. The locking mechanism cannot be identified and the key is missing. Perhaps it is a twisted key due to the screw in the middle. The keyhole itself may have previously been hidden, as the drawer above indicates. The inner surface shows rich decorative decoration and at the top, where the rod is placed, are small animals cast facing each other. Their nature may not be precisely defined, but they represent quadrupedal mammals, perhaps dogs or bears. Determining the history of these pieces was particularly difficult, as the shape and appearance of the lock appear to have been in use from previous periods and over several centuries. There are only two existing pieces that are completely similar to this piece, but their dates are different. One of the pieces belongs to the Kerr Collection and is today in the Dallas Museum of Art and has been dated to the thirteenth-fourteenth century AD (K.1.2014.508). The other piece is part of the Tanavoli collection and its date is considered to be the pre-Islamic era.
