Ferdowsi's poetic epic Shahnameh, which was completed in 1010, tells the legendary history of Iran's shahs (kings) until the Arab invasion of the country in 642 and the country's conversion to Islam. This epic was the source of inspiration for many illustrated versions, and the current page is separated from a version known as the "Big Head" of the Shahnameh. This name refers to the special feature of most of its depictions: the large heads of human figures.
