Notes
Incense burners, shaped like hollow metal balls, were common throughout the medieval Islamic world. The moving balls contain a device that keeps the small containers of charcoal and aromatic substance in a horizontal position. These balls were used not only to burn incense but also for amber and sandalwood. The medallion in this incense burner depicts the emblem of rule, which indicates a person’s rank in the court of the Mamluk Sultan. The elaborate decorative decoration includes integrated engraving.
