Notes
This manuscript is a reproduction of part of the thirty volumes of the Encyclopedia of Attribution, written by Abu al-Qasim al-Zahrawi, known in the West as “Aboulcassis,” who lived from 320 to 401 AH/936-1016 AD during the period of the Caliphate in Cordoba. Abu Al-Qasim was considered the greatest doctor and surgeon of his time. He included in his encyclopedia the results of his medical operations. He also described and drew about two hundred surgical instruments that he used, and in most cases he invented and manufactured them himself. This huge book constituted an essential reference book for Moroccan university students. Since the printing press did not exist at that time, it was copied, as is the case with all scientific works, by professional calligraphers who were the painters of their time. This copy, whose calligrapher is not known, dates back to the Almohad period and consists of 329 pages. Most of the thirty chapters that make up this work, which are written in cursive script, also known as Moroccan script, deal with the development of treatments for wounds and methods of prevention. On the page that deals with cauterization treatments, surgical instruments are represented, in a somewhat simple way, drawn in black, red, and yellow.
