Notes This part of the book cover is striking because of its contrast in brown and gold and also for the balance of the decoration. The deeply worked images in the center and corner of the central field are formed by Chinese cloud and arch shapes, while the surrounding decorative borders form coiled vine shapes with winding saz leaves. The uncomfortable aspect of the gold medallions is evident because they are all surrounded by empty space in the unadorned areas. The comprehensive movement of forms corresponds to decoration in book gilding, cloth art, and architectural ceramics.
