Notes
With the introduction of porcelain paste, which is firmer than pottery paste in the working condition, Syrian potters in the 12th century branched out, specializing in the production of ceramic furniture such as this turquoise glazed table. Six-sided tables of this type are believed to be based on wooden tables that have disappeared. Perhaps in reference to the places in which they were used, the tables are characterized by architectural forms such as stylized columns (resembling balusters) on the sides and a perforated table top that resembles a mashrabiya, a type of window grille with an openwork operation of geometric design.
