Notes
An ivory box with a conical stem-shaped lid with a silver buckle. The engraved decoration, which includes intertwined leafy branches and an inscription in Arabic stating that the box was made for the daughter of Abd al-Rahman III, is almost identical to the decorations found on another box in the Victoria and Albert Museum, except for some spelling errors. It has been believed, for many years, that this box is nothing but a copy of the other box in the Victoria and Albert Museum, made in the nineteenth century by the Spanish forger Don Francisco Pallas y Puig (1859-1926), but radiocarbon analysis has recently confirmed that this piece is most likely original, and that it and its twin may have been made for the benefit of the Caliph’s daughter.
