Notes This paper is one of the oldest surviving copies of the Qur’an. It is made of palimpsest parchment: the original text is scraped off and a new text is written on parchment. The original text has been redacted and can be read as a shadow under the later text. Both texts are from the second surah of the Qur’an, “Al-Baqarah,” and both texts were written in the Hijazi script, which is the oldest Arabic script used in writing the Qur’an.
