Notes A jewelry box made of thorn wood, covered with ivory sheets with corners reinforced with enamelled brass. A prismatic-shaped structure with a tomb-shaped lid. The perforated ivory sheets present a delicate, stylized floral decoration, with a beautiful light-dark effect, and are composed of grated and ringed leaves, and palmettes, between which peacocks, deer, and osprey phoenixes are sandwiched facing each other. In this decoration we find the ancient theme of the lion attacking the stag and of the archers hunting. The decoration was completed with an inscription in lush Kufic letters that read: “In the Name of God, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful; Perpetual Blessing; Complete Wellness; Perpetual Peace; Perpetual Bliss; Renewed Benefit; Glory; Yemen; Continuing Blessings; and the Hope of Being Heard by its Owner, May God Long Live His Life.” From what he ordered to be done in the city of Quynqa, by the orders of Hajib Sham al-Dawla, Abu Muhammad Ismail, Ibn al-Mamun Dhul-Maidin, Ibn al-Dhafir. Dhu al-Riyastin, Abu Muhammad Ibn Dhu al-Nun, may God grant him success in the year 1441. The work of Abd al-Rahman Ibn Ziban. Although it would be dangerous to talk about an ivory workshop in Quynqa, three jewelry caskets dating from the 4th/11th century have been inventoried: the Selous casket (1026) in the Borges Museum today, this Palencia casket (1049-1050) and the Narbonne Cathedral casket, contemporary with the previous casket.
