Notes
Although parchment had begun to become popular everywhere in the Islamic world, these two pages, copied in gold ink on parchment, reflect the conservative nature of Spain in the 7th/13th century, as does their distinctive script. The script is known as Maghribi in reference to the region of North Africa, which includes almost modern Morocco. This Siyal script is a direct type of the Kufic calligraphy, and while it maintains some distinction and size from the previous straight calligraphy, the Maghribi script includes beautiful, deeply curved lines. It developed at the beginning of the sixth/twelfth century in both Spain and North Africa, and its use was limited to these regions.
