Notes
Metallic luster ceramics were known in the city of Raqqa in the 6th century / 12th century and the first half of the 7th century / 13th century. This type of ceramics is distinguished from other types by the color for which it is famous, which is dark brown. The piece represents this type of ceramics. It is a jug with a vertical base, a spherical stem, a long cylindrical neck, and a flange that extends outward. The jug is equipped with a long tubular serpent and a loop parallel to the lip that turns vertically towards the stem and attaches to its tip. The jug is decorated with brown metallic luster from the top of the lip, the serpent, the loop and the neck to the lower abdomen. Most of the decoration is arranged in horizontal bands, consisting of epigraphic, semi-script, vegetal, and geometric motifs. Variation in color intensity and band width also constitutes a decorative element. All decorations were executed with brown metallic luster paint over a very light green, transparent glaze.
