Notes When Iraqi potters discovered white-glazed pottery, later known as faience porcelain, they also began to use the luster painting technique. The luster paint consists of metal oxides added to pottery that has been fired. The piece is re-fired at a low temperature in a low-oxygen atmosphere and the delicate decoration takes on a metallic appearance ranging from copper to gold.
