Notes When this carpet was discovered, its unusual design of animals facing off against smaller animals within it was only known from a carpet depicted in a Sienese painting of around 1410 called The Marriage of the Virgin in the collection of the National Gallery, London. The carpet pattern in the painting is partially obscured by the standing figures, which would not be comprehensive without this example. The purchase of the piece, which was called for in carpet collecting circles, brought one of the first Turkish carpets preserved in the world to the museum, and the design of the area may be derived from medieval tapestries with patterns containing double animals in rooms.
