Notes
From the late sixteenth century until the formation of the Turkish Republic in 1922, the sultans maintained the tradition of imperial portraiture. This was influenced by European oil painting and Persian miniatures, and Ottoman portraits provide important information about court occasions, changing costumes, and members of the court. The right side of the double-page composition of this panel is formed into the pendant motif of a portrait of Selim II (reigned 974-982 AH / 1566-1574 AD) on the left, the panel is now in the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto. The musicians, servants and court figures identified by their inscriptions face the Sultan to the left, indicating that he is their ruler. It was taken with a pair of panels depicting a majlis scene that reflects the atmosphere. The happiness of Selim's court. It is possible that there is a person from the court working as a jester in the far right, which is a self-portrait of the artist.
