Notes This painting, which is characterized by a remarkable complexity of lines and details that belies its small size, was probably executed in a studio at the Ottoman court (Nakshākhana) in Istanbul. In the second half of the tenth/sixteenth century there developed a distinct style of painting separate from the largely fanciful tradition of manuscript depiction. This style is known as the saz style, named after the reed pen used in its execution. This style focuses on the exquisite and dazzling depiction, which includes Chinese figures and feather-touched leaves. Here there are two dragons disappearing among the dense, rough leaves, gliding silently, which are barely visible at first glance. Instead of focusing on pure calligraphy, the unknown artist stuck to the rough naturalness of the objects. Spotted scale dragons and the sinuous veins of serrated leaves.
