Notes
The photo, called “Praying around the Kaaba,” is signed by the Meccan doctor Abdul Ghaffar, the first resident of Mecca to photograph the Grand Mosque. In 1885, photographer Christian Snook Hürgrunge, the first European photographer in Mecca, taught Abdul Ghaffar how to use the camera better. When Snook was expelled from the Hijaz, he left his photographic equipment with Abdul Ghaffar, who took a series of important photographs of the Hajj rituals. Many of his photographs of the Hajj were used in Snook’s book (Photographs from Mecca), which was published in 1889. (See ARC section 784: Hajj and Hajj Arts/Collections. Al-Khalili).
