Notes Manuscripts of this particular form are known as Safina, a Persian word meaning boat, which is a reference to their long, narrow, boat-like shape. The ships were meant to be kept in the pocket, and most of them are excerpts of poetry, such as this manuscript. Ships were particularly popular in 15th century Iran during the rule of the Timurid ruling family. The three panels shown here illustrate Ferdowsi's Shahnameh (Book of Kings) and Nizami's epic Layla and Majnun. The margins of most pages of the manuscript are decorated with stencil prints.
