Notes
The piece is a limestone slab with Arabic inscription showing that Ajloun Castle was renovated in 659 / 1261 during the time of the Mamluk Sultan Al-Zahir Baybars (ruled in the period 658 / 1260 - 676 / 1277). In 1927, an earthquake struck the area, which led to the collapse of the southwestern part of Ajloun Castle. In 1967, the Department of Antiquities restored this part of the castle and cleaned the moat surrounding the castle. During these works, this inscription was found, which shows the period in which the third floor of the citadel was built, which was the Mamluk period. The inscription consists of three lines written in Naskh script, and reads: “Worked in the days of our Lord Sultan Al-Malik Al-Zahir (the pillar) of the world and the religion, Baibars Al-Salihi, may God honor his eyes, in the eyes of the poor servant, who hopes for God’s forgiveness and forgiveness, the king of the princes, Izz Al-Din Aybak Al-Alani, on the date of the twentieth of Shaban in the year six hundred and fifty-nine.”
