Notes
A piece of a stele, engraved on both sides. Its shape is almost rectangular, and its color is woolly white with a light maroon tinge. The remaining inner side contains a circular opening attesting to the form of binding or fastening that connected it to the original structure (it appears to belong to the lid of a jewelry box). The two surfaces present carefully engraved decorations, carefully outlined with some incisions on the lower side. The decorations on one side represent a royal eagle spreading its wings, but standing on the ground with its head turned to the left, and on the other side an animal from the elk family holding a plant-shaped element in its mouth. The two figures surrounded by floral elements, which suggest movement towards the center of the plate, also represent a hunting scene, and this decorative theme appears in other pieces of ivory, wood and metal from the same period. Given the quality of the decoration and the elements represented, the piece could form part of a masterpiece of luxury art, very similar to other pieces made in Cordoba, especially in the Khalaf workshops. The quality of the decoration on both surfaces suggests that this piece was part of a structure with both sides visible.
