Notes
The brass mortar and hand were generally used as a tool in medieval Islamic society. It is a household tool for preparing food and the mortar and pestle is used by alchemists and pharmacists and in fact it has become closely associated with the latter profession as depicted in Islamic manuscripts such as Dioscorides, The Book of Medicines, a guide to medicinal plants. This mortar and pestle is a rare set that has survived intact due to its extensive decoration and excellent condition. Although the mortar shows little indication of being a vessel type, its octagonal outer shape with flat base and wide rim and contrasting circular inner surface were intended to achieve effective crushing.
