Notes
This drawing is a single page of a monkey taunting a lion on a page from a sparse album. The drawing is presented in a pale blue frame decorated with golden trees, flowers, and a narrow decorative border. The drawing is framed in black and has line details with some light gray shadows. The subject of this drawing is not specified in narrative text but could have been inspired by animal fairy tales such as Kalila and Dimna, which have a long tradition in Iran. It is possible that the artist was also influenced by the abundance of Chinese embroideries and models. And the shapes at the beginning of the fifteenth century, and the popularity of Chinese painting and artistic drawing of paintings could be an inspiration for this drawing and the similarity in the wild natural landscape with the fighting animals and dragons.
