Notes
A small square dish made of molded and relief ceramic. It consists of nine sections, five round and four oval in the corners. The flat space around these sections is covered with relief decorations. It was most likely used as a spice tray, with a different type placed in each section. Unusually for the manufacture of this type of ceramics, the craftsman signed the piece with the name “Abu Nasr,” indicating that he is from Basra and was manufactured in Egypt. It is possible that this Abu Nasr moved from Basra during a period of political troubles to settle in Egypt during a period of relative stability in the Tulunid period, thus providing an important example of the tendency of craftsmen to leave areas of political conflict for more stable areas where they were encouraged.
