Notes
This portrait of Moulay Hassan, the Sultan of Tunisia, is either based on a painting in the Uffizi Galleries or is a now-lost prototype that was previously in the collection of portraits by Paolo Giovio. All the portraits in the group appear to be based on a portrait of the Sultan by Cornelius Vermin, the Dutch artist who accompanied Charles V on his campaign against Tunisia in 1535 AD. The campaign was the Emperor's response to the occupation of the city by the Ottoman Admiral Khair ad-Din Barbarossa, who forced the Emperor's ally Moulay Hassan to flee to Spain. The painting is from a group of more than 900 portraits that Archduke Ferdinand II of Tyrol (1529-95 AD) began collecting in 1676 AD. The small paintings come from a range of sources and reflect both historical and contemporary figures.
