Notes
A panel of azulejos (Moroccan faience, azulejos) decorated with blue, turquoise, green and red. The central composition is surrounded by coils of abstract clouds that form a serpentine band surrounding, within a trefoil frame, a lotus flower. Spiral branches extend from the central shape towards leaves, flower buds and hatayi (Chinese-inspired wreaths). Although the zellij panels in Ottoman architecture are intended to decorate interior spaces, the source of this panel has not yet been confirmed, but it is certain that it belongs to a group of twelve front panels, almost identical, that used to decorate a building that was constructed by order of Pyal Pasha, the president of the emirate and one of the close associates of Sultan Selim II. But a doubt remains regarding the purpose of the building: Was it a mosque or a palace? According to popular opinion, these paintings were taken from the Bayalpaşa Mosque (Istanbul), which was built by Sinan in the year 980-981 AH / 1573-1574 AD, which is confirmed by the disappearance of all the panels on the front of the building and the preservation of the mihrab alone.
