Notes This dish can be part of a tableware set or an incense burner. It is expertly decorated with an engraved pattern and inlaid with precious metals. The piece speaks to us using the basic Iranian symbols of leadership and happiness. In the center is the sun, which radiates life-giving light. Around it and between the petals of the little rose are six pairs of birds, each pair perching on the opposite end of the bowl. There are two birds drinking from the bowl or tank, which is an ancient West Asian symbol of paradise and the immortality of the soul. There are also congratulatory phrases written in calligraphy on the outside walls, which are very worldly: “Long glory, prosperous life, great success, high station.” Such wishes were common at the time and therefore easily recognizable regardless of the educational background of the reader. The Z-shaped pattern of the background indicates that the dish could have originated from the western part of Iran.
