Notes
Artists of Iran during the Safavid era (1501-1722) excelled in the art of portraiture, whether on paper or other mediums. Paintings painted in the royal courtyards showed a small group of handsome people engaged in various leisure activities. The tiled walls of baths show groups of solitary men and women exercising, wearing magnificent helmets and hairstyles. The prominent figure style of the period originated from the well-known painter Reza Abbasi (lived Approximately during 1565-1635) who worked in the court of Shah Abbas in Isfahan. Many of the features that distinguish his forms appear in the works of his followers in Isfahan well during the second half of the seventeenth century when he produced this plate. Here the face is shown in a view that takes up three-quarters of the space, the neck is tilted forward, and the chin hangs down on the chest, as was Reza Abbasi’s method in drawing portraits, with the chin full and the mouth, on the contrary, delicate, and the pose is in the shape of a swan, which indicates an atmosphere Boredom.
