Notes
These views of Mecca and Medina are intricately carved into wood and date from the beginning of the 20th century. The wood is likely basswood, which is soft, light-grained and easy to work with, ideal for complex carving. The background is made of light colored satin. It depicts Mecca with the Ottoman Ajyad Citadel on the Ajyad Mountain Range (sometimes known as Jebel Kuda, the Citadel or Al-Bulbul) dominating the background. Around the Kaaba there are buildings that were located within the sanctuary, and the buildings and fortress no longer exist. The city is depicted from one side as a square surrounded by a desert landscape with some camels in it. Another example is in the Mevlana Museum in Konya in Türkiye.
