A vase made of smoky quartz is included in the list of the art room of Emperor Rudolf II. It was found in the list in 1607 - 11 AD. It was probably made in Persia, even if no comparable piece is known. Surviving records document diplomatic exchanges between Rudolf II and Shah Abbas the Great (1587 - 1628 AD) starting in 1600 AD.
