Notes This caftan was originally worn by an important person and the current caftan was at some point converted into a church garment and kept in the Cosia Monastery (in southwestern Romania) where it was discovered in 1864. In the mid-1950s it was transferred to the museum and later included in its original collection. The long, flared gown with long sleeves is excessively decorated with a cluster of eight-petaled roses on a red background. Each rose surrounds a lotus flower. Between the roses there is a delicately swirled design with small wild roses.
